Oliver Freundlich - State Street Townhouse
On a tree lined block in Boerum Hill, the challenges of this townhouse, renovated by Oliver Freundlich, are how to bring sufficient light in the home. If a typical brownstone is 20’ wide by 40’ deep, this house at 12.83’ x 47’ is significantly narrower and deeper. Surrounded by taller buildings and a small garden, Freundlich adopted multiple strategies such as opening the back wall and painting walls and floors white to create a house that still feels light and airy. I love the informal placement of the built-in spotlight. By deliberately placing the fixture off center, they begin to dissociate from the formal architecture of the townhouse and it becomes its own feature like a piece of furniture.
