Lang Architecture - Carroll Gardens Townhouse

I love architects that problem solve. This very narrow townhouse does not have a lot of room for formal parlor living and a graceful entrance. The solution Lang came up with is to establish the kitchen as the dominant function on the parlor floor adjacent to a modestly furnished reading room that almost functions as a second foyer. Rather than stuffing another formal living space on the parlor level, the other major family room is on the garden level and the result is that all of these spaces feel more spacious and generous than the 14’ width would suggest. I appreciate  the Turell-esque skylight upstairs, but the real ingenuity comes from small moves in plan like creating a nook next to the vestibule, or pulling the kitchen cabinets off the rear wall, to create a well proportioned dining space and allow the window wall to go nearly the entire width of the house.
